Teletherapy

What is Teletherapy?

Teletherapy is the online delivery of mental health therapy sessions by means of Skype, Zoom or other suggested high-resolution, live video contact. Teletherapy sessions are very similar to face-to-face in-office personal contact sessions, but with the major difference of not physically coming to my office for a session. During a teletherapy session, we will meet via the internet, while you sit in a safe and comfortable room of your choosing, and I will be sitting in my office, talking to you.

During our therapy sessions, we will be able to see, hear and talk to each other in real-time. You will be sitting in front of your computer, or your tablet or cellphone while I sit in my office in front of my computer. We will make contact via Skype or Zoom so that we ensure confidentiality and safety. The actual therapy session is the same as a face-to-face session, but using our screens and a high-resolution platform to ensure good quality contact.

How can it help people who need therapy?

Where people are far from psychologists and in need of services, it is very comforting that you have access to quality services, without having to travel. This also ensures that you can maintain regular therapy sessions which can be very challenging when you have to travel. You can now have the therapy services you need from your home, or a comfortable, confidential and safe space of your choosing. As psychological services may not be available where you live, you are now able to access services without difficulty.

Teleplay therapy

Our children love screen time, and teletherapy and play therapy is a very child-friendly means of providing therapy. They enjoy sitting in front of the computer, and it is therefore not a strange experience for them. In fact, it can be quite exciting for them to participate in sessions. Teleplay therapy is also very effective for younger children. Our children are used to using computers, tablets, and cellphones. Parents can help their child to log in remotely, and know that therapy can safely and effectively continue as usual, at their scheduled time. Sessions might be shorter for younger children to ensure their focus, concentration and optimal participation. For adolescents and adults, a 50 - 60 minute session is still advised. You do not need to organise a babysitter or other supervision, as your child can be safely placed in a spot that is comfortable for him/her.

During the Coronavirus

At a time where social distancing is of vital importance to not spread the disease, and to keep everybody safe and healthy, telepsychology is a wonderful means of receiving the necessary help that you and your family need. At this time of uncertainty and high anxiety, it is comforting to know that I am just a click away from helping you and your loved ones. Teletherapy is an effective way of providing and receiving therapy to suit your mental health needs. While you and your child may not be able to visit me personally during this time, we can still be in contact so that they can voice their worries, concerns, and emotions via play therapy or other therapy tools that I use for children- depending on their age. We can still meet at their scheduled time once or twice a week so that therapy is not interrupted.

How effective is teletherapy

This means of therapy is very successful and effective. You will be happy to know that I did my dissertation in the late ’90s on telepsychology, and distance delivery of services and training of lay counsellors. This means of therapy has been with us for more than 20 years and studied for much longer. Teletherapy is regarded as a valid means of intervention. Although I love accommodating clients in person at my office, this is an excellent alternative when it is not possible.

It is important to note that this means of therapy will not be for everyone, especially kids with focus and concentration issues. Having said that, a short 20 or 30-minute session twice a week, will still be better than not receiving the necessary intervention.

What about confidentiality?

The same ethical guidelines are adhered to as will be applicable to office-based consultation and therapy. The means of contact is chosen to ensure your privacy and confidentiality.

How can I make an appointment?

Get in contact with me by giving me a call or feel free to send me an email to set up an appointment. We can schedule a time that is convenient for you, and when I am available.

What about fees?

I charge according to medical aid rates. The current Discovery rate for a 50 - 60-minute session is R997.10
